Review:

Featured Guest Review by Marshall Goldsmith

Marshall Goldsmith has been recognized by almost every major business publication as one of America's leading executive educators and coaches. He is the author or co-editor of more than 32 books, including the New York Times best sellers What Got You Here Won't Get You There and Mojo.

Twenty-five years after the first edition was published, The Leadership Challenge by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner is still my choice for the best research-based book ever written in the field of leadership. It is a classic, and I recommend it to all of my clients.

The Leadership Challenge is written for real leaders, who today face some of the toughest organizational challenges we've ever encountered. And, it provides practical, real-world advice based on Jim's and Barry's extensive global research that is indispensable for leaders at all levels.

I always refer leaders to this book, because although my Ph.D. is in Organizational Behavior, my undergraduate background is in mathematics. And, I respect people who gather real facts! In developing the Leadership Practices Inventory, which is possibly the world's most widely respected tool for 360° leadership feedback, Jim and Barry have thoroughly reviewed input from tens of thousands of respondents. They've then used this data to form sound conclusions about what works--and what doesn't work--in terms of leadership behavior.

The central theme of The Leadership Challenge is that leadership is for everyone. It can be learned, but, let's face it, it's not easy. The Leadership Challenge is based upon learnings from leaders at all levels--and shows how 'regular people' can make a huge, positive difference in their organizations. It is written in a way that can help executives, mid-managers, first-line supervisors, project leaders--and even individual contributors--better understand how they can lead and immediately apply what they have learned in their work.

For example, Jim and Barry asked managers about their clarity around their personal values as well as around the values of their organizations. These managers were also asked about their level of commitment to the organization, their level of motivation and productivity, job satisfaction, and so on. To me, what they found is fascinating! Leaders with the highest levels of commitment are those who are clearest about their own personal values. Clarity about personal values was more prevalent in a positive workplace attitude and level of engagement than was clarity around organizational values. In doing the research for my recent book, Mojo, I found something similar to be true as well: People who find happiness and meaning at home are more likely to also find happiness and meaning at work.

Finally, for those of you reading this book now, I'd highly recommend that you put what you read here into practice. This book can help you lead in such a way that your organization will become a better place for you, your managers, employees, and colleagues-to-be. At the same time, if you implement what you learn here, you'll make a positive difference in not only your organization, but also in your own life and in the lives of those whom you lead.

From the Back Cover:

'The Leadership Challenge is still popular and relevant after 25 years for a reason: it is a classic. No one provides more practical real-world advice than Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner. This is the book on leadership that I recommend to all of my clients, and I think this is the greatest book on leadership ever written.'
MARSHALL GOLDSMITH, bestselling author, MOJO and What Got You Here Won't Get You There

'This is perhaps the most comprehensive field guide ever written for leaders. It has been a key part of my personal journey as a leader for years.'
PATRICK LENCIONI, president, The Table Group; bestselling author, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team and The Advantage

'Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner have done it again! In this all-new fifth edition of The Leadership Challenge—the bible for leaders everywhere—they have taken their leadership ideas to new heights, befitting of the challenges leaders face in this global era.'
BILL GEORGE, author, True North; former chairman and CEO, Medtronic, Inc.

'No book has ever chronicled the practices of true leadership better than The Leadership Challenge, and this updated edition deftly outlines how to be a phenomenal leader in the 21st century.'
CHIP CONLEY, founder, Joie de Vivre Hotels; author, PEAK and Emotional Equations

'Now in its fifth edition, The Leadership Challenge has stood the test of time for good reason: it's quite simply one of the best books you'll ever read on leadership.'
KEN BLANCHARD, coauthor, The One Minute Manager® and Great Leaders Grow

'I read The Leadership Challenge as a new manager building Oracle University and was deeply affected by it. It shaped me as a leader and influenced my career. Reading the fifth edition twenty years later, I am struck by how its wisdom stands the test of time while also providing fresh, relevant insights for leading at your best and mobilizing others to achieve the extraordinary.'
LIZ WISEMAN, author, Multipliers

'The Leadership Challenge remains one of the five best books I have ever read. Twenty-five years after its first publication, I still continually recommend it to others looking to improve as leaders.'
JOHN C. MAXWELL, leadership expert; bestselling author, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership

I had to read this for work, which must qualify as some kind of cruel and unusual punishment. Anyway:
The Leadership Challenge – A review in clichés and idioms.
The Leadership Challenge describes itself as an evidence-based primer on the near-universal qualities of excellent leaders. Its authors state that they have conducted years of research on leadership, and have distilled the data into what they have identified as the five practices of successful leaders.
Each of the five practices is then se

Yet another book on leadership that doesn't really define what leadership is - other than by a series of anecdotes related to people who are presumably successful leaders. The main problem here for me is that it is never clear that the remarkably positive stories being told reflect something other than the story the leaders might want other people to hear or to tell about themselves. As someone who quite likes to read fiction - even if I haven't for far too long - the one thing such reading has...more

I received more from this book then I could have hoped for. Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner wrote the original version of this book in 1987 but that shouldn't scare you because they are on their 5th edition of this book in which they add new case studies, more interviews with other leaders, and other updates.
Every time I read a book like this I check the credibility of the authors and if you do your own research you'd know that these two are more then credible to write a book on leadership. Wheneve

A cliched and trite trudge. It is somewhat shocking that this book is in its 4th edition, and is mostly composed of common sense platitudes; being required to read this for grad school is some sort of punishment, surely. To be fair, some of the author's points about the dangers of micromanagement and engaging employees on a personal level are well-founded, but perhaps not a lesson that required 350 pages to convey.
This is a good leadership book. I am tempted to give it a five after reading the last chapter, but the bulk of the book is four-star material. The last chapter is absolutely leadership gold? Intrigued? Pick it up and read it!

The book is great in that it covers a lot of real-life examples of leadership exhibited in organizations of all sizes and industries all around the world. The principles in it are also key to success. I probably could have skimmed the whole book and gotten a similar level of output. Glad I learned that for future similar texts.

Great ideas and insights from within the book:
Clarify values
Good exercise – write a tribute to yourself:
1. What do you stand for?
2. What do you believe in?
3. What are you discontent about?
4. What brings you suffering?
5. What makes you weep and wail?
6. What makes you jump for joy?
7. What are you passionate about?
8. What keeps you awake at night?
9. What's grabbed hold and won't let go?
10. What do you want for your life?
11. What is it you really care about?
Write your credo. 'This I believe.'

This framework for understanding leadership is by far the simplest, fully comprehensive approach I have come across.
While most leadership tactics and thought schools have value, even the most valuable is not likely to allow for remembering all 21 or more leadership traits. True, each of these 5 leadership behavior categories is broken down into two other and then six other behavior types in the LPI survey, but the understanding surrounding the 5 core value behaviors remains constant.

When I posted the review on Warren Bennis' 'On Leadership', I mentioned that books I had started since I had started Bennis' text had caused me to re-think whether or not I found Bennis' text informative. 'The Leadership Challenge' was the book that spurred the re-thinking.
Pretty good insight as to how to become a better leader. Lots of good stories and examples. Many of the tricks they offer are easy to implement - being a better leader is as simple as choosing to be a better leader. This book

I had to read this as part of a group project (for a class in the nonprofit management certificate program).
While I think this book provides some great ideas and insight for leaders, I think it could be shorter. It's a little repetitive and redundant at times. I don't think it provided me with much information that I hadn't heard before--though some of the examples were nice illustrations.

I consider Leadership Challenge by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner to be the best research-based book ever written in the field of leadership.
What I love about this book is that it is actually written for its readers!
Let's face it--very few readers of business books are CEO's of multi-billion corporations. Yet many business books follow the same over-used formula--interviewing CEOs--talking about what they are doing so well--and suggesting that you do the same thing.

I had a three-day course once, called 'the leadership challenge'. I thought the book would be similar - that the course was based on the book - and in some sense it was. This book gave me a lot to reflect upon. It also gave me support in affirming that some of the ideas I have been nurturing during summer holiday are worthy of implementation. I've mulled over the content and taken notes. Whether this book deserves a five star rating is something I expect I'll find out eventually.

Goodreads' algorithm had this on my 'recommended' list for a long time, so I knocked it out. All leadership books overlap or draw from each other; occasionally one, like this one, cites a particular survey. It was updated in each edition from 1987-2007, without much significant change between the initial survey and the latest. This book reminded me...more
